Updates:

Dominica, located in the Eastern Caribbean about 700 miles north of Venezuela, is known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean due to its lush rainforests, waterfalls, and volcanic terrain. It’s home to unique wildlife, including the critically endangered sisserou parrot and the world’s second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. The island’s rugged beauty makes it perfect for nature lovers, but even if you don’t venture far, Roseau itself has plenty to offer.

Arriving at the Port

Your cruise ship docks at Roseau, Dominica’s capital on the southwest coast. The single pier extends from the town center, making for an easy walk to the main areas. Here’s what to expect:

  • Tours & Taxis: Right at the pier entrance, with regulated fares.

  • Taxi Rates: About $30 USD per hour or $70-$80 USD for an island tour. Negotiation is possible, but pre-booking is best.

  • No Rideshare Services: Uber and Lyft are unavailable.

Navigating Roseau

The port area is compact and convenient:

  • Tourist Info & Museum: Directly in front of the pier.

  • Old Market: Located behind the info center.

  • Banks & ATMs: A short walk away.

Currency:

Dominica uses Eastern Caribbean Dollars (ECD), but US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted. However, carrying some ECD is a good idea for local markets. The exchange rate is about 2.7 ECD to 1 USD.

Exploring Town on Foot

Roseau is small but full of character, with colorful buildings and a relaxed vibe. However, be cautious of the sidewalks and roads—they’re narrow, uneven, and cars often speed through. If you have mobility issues, exploring on foot may be challenging.

1. Dominica Botanical Gardens & Jack’s Walk Trail

A short walk from the pier, this open green space features exotic plants, towering trees, and historical remnants like the Hurricane Bus, crushed by a tree during Hurricane David (1979).

  • Jack’s Walk Trail: A 20-25 minute uphill hike leads to Morne Bruce Viewpoint, offering stunning views of Roseau.

  • Trail Entry Points: Either Valley Road (near public restrooms) or past the Parrot Enclosure (where the 35 steps start).

  • Difficulty: Moderate, with steep inclines and switchbacks. The trail dates back to the 1880s, giving it an adventurous, almost “Temple of Doom” feel.

  • Time Needed: 2 hours for the gardens and hike.

2. Dominica Museum & Historic Market

  • Location: Right across from the taxi stand.

  • What to Expect: Exhibits on Dominica’s volcanic history, indigenous cultures, and colonial past.

  • Bonus: Entry includes access to a balcony with harbor views.

  • Time Needed: 30-60 minutes.

3. Local Markets & Supermarket Stop

  • Fresh Market: A large supermarket with affordable local food.

  • Street Vendors & Tents: Selling crafts, spices, and souvenirs.

Tips: Prices in stores are marked in ECD, so confirm exchange rates if paying in USD.

4. Trying Local Food

We stumbled upon a small family-run café next to the closed Ruins Rock Café—a hidden gem! Taking chances on local spots can lead to some of the best experiences.

For dessert, we tried an ice cream spot near Fresh Market, popular with locals. You pay first, then take your receipt to the server. We enjoyed it under a shaded tent near the port entrance, offering a great place to people-watch.

Final Thoughts: Is Roseau Worth Exploring Without a Tour?

Absolutely! While many visitors book island excursions, you can still have a great experience right in town. The people are warm and welcoming, and there’s a surprising amount to see on foot. Just watch your step on those sidewalks!
