Trondheim

Trondheim, Norway, is a city with a Viking heart and a modern soul. As Norway's third-largest city, it is a hub of history, culture, and innovation, with a large student population that keeps the atmosphere vibrant and lively. The city is famous for its stunning Nidaros Cathedral, its colorful waterfront warehouses, and a deep appreciation for local food and music. As a cruise port, Trondheim is a fantastic destination for those who want to explore a city that is rich with history but also forward-looking and easy to navigate.

⛵ Port Introduction

Your ship will dock directly at one of the main quays at the Port of Trondheim, which is located just on the outskirts of the city center. This is a huge advantage, as you can walk right off the ship and into the heart of Trondheim. On every cruise call, you'll be welcomed by local hosts, often in traditional Norwegian costumes.

⚓ Terminal Information

The cruise port is in downtown Honningsvåg. In close proximity from the pier are the town's main shops, bars, and restaurants. The port has a total of six docking piers, all of which are located within a short walking distance from the town's center. For a larger ship, you may be tendered to one of the two tender piers.

🚻 Terminal Facilities

While there is no large, permanent terminal building at the pier itself, the area is well-equipped with amenities. You will find a welcome team of hosts to assist you, and tour pickups are located just outside the pier area. The city's main tourist information office is just a 10-minute walk away, where you can find maps, brochures, and free Wi-Fi.

🗣️ Language

The local language is Norwegian, but given the high volume of tourism, you will find that English is widely spoken in Trondheim. You will have no problem navigating, communicating, or exploring the city.

A few useful phrases:

  • Hei (hey) - Hello

  • Takk (tahk) - Thank you

  • Unnskyld (OON-shool) - Excuse me

  • Vennligst (VEHN-leest) - Please

💰 Money

The official currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). Credit cards are the preferred method of payment and are widely accepted everywhere, even for very small purchases. In fact, many places in Norway are now cashless. It's not a bad idea to have a bit of cash on hand, but it is not necessary. ATMs are easy to find throughout the city. Tipping is not mandatory or expected in Norway, as a service charge is included in the bill.

🚗 Transportation

Trondheim is a very walkable city, and its main attractions are clustered in the city center.

  • Walking: The best way to explore Trondheim is on foot. The historic Bakklandet district, the Nidaros Cathedral, and the main shopping streets are all within easy walking distance of the cruise terminal.

  • Bus: Trondheim has an excellent public bus system, run by AtB. You can buy a day ticket using the AtB app. Buses are very modern and have low entrances and ramps for easy boarding with wheelchairs and strollers.

  • Tram: Trondheim has a historic tram line, "Gråkallbanen," which is the northernmost tram line in the world. It is a scenic ride and a tourist attraction in itself.

  • Taxis: Taxis are available, but they can be expensive. You can call a taxi or find a taxi stand in the city center.

♿ Accessibility

Trondheim has an accessibility rating of 6 out of 10. The cruise pier is modern and the walk to the city center is on a flat, well-maintained path. The city itself has worked to improve accessibility, with many buses having low floors and ramps. However, the historic Bakklandet district has cobblestone streets and some steep areas that can be a challenge.

🚶‍♀️ The best way to get to town from cruise port

The best way to get to town is to simply walk. The port is located very close to the city center, and you can easily walk to all the main attractions. The walk will take you over a pedestrian bridge that crosses the train station.

🚽 Toilet

Public toilets are available in the city center, especially in centrally located shopping malls and at the main square, Torvet. You may have to pay a small fee to use some public toilets.

💊 Drugstore

  • Boots Apotek: Boots has a location in Trondheim at Kongens gate 27, which is in the city center.

  • Apotek 1 Svanen: This is another major pharmacy located at Kongens gate 14B, also a short walk from the cruise pier.

✨ Authentic Experience

  1. Walk the Historic Bakklandet District: For a taste of old Trondheim, take a walk through the charming Bakklandet district. This neighborhood is known for its narrow streets and colorful wooden houses. Here you can find unique boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. It is a great place to wander, get lost, and take some photos of the beautiful homes along the river.

  2. Dine on Local Norwegian Cuisine with a Modern Twist: Trondheim has a growing reputation as a foodie destination. Seek out a local restaurant and try some traditional Norwegian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Look for dishes with local fish, like cod or salmon, or a hearty meat dish.

  3. Visit the Nidaros Cathedral: The Nidaros Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and is the national sanctuary of Norway. It is built over the tomb of St. Olav, the Viking king who became the patron saint of Norway. The cathedral is stunning both inside and out, and it is a must-see for anyone interested in history and architecture.
