Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden is a stunning city of islands, bridges, and waterways, often called the "Venice of the North" or the "Beauty on Water." With a history that spans centuries, it is a city that beautifully balances old-world charm with a modern, innovative spirit. The city is a masterpiece of urban planning and natural beauty, with a third of the city being water, a third green space, and a third urban landscape. For a cruiser, Stockholm offers a perfect blend of historic exploration, world-class museums, and a lively atmosphere that makes it a must-see.

⛵ Port Introduction

Stockholm is a major European port, and your ship's docking location will determine your access to the city. Many ships are able to dock right in the city center at one of the inner-city quays, which is a significant advantage. The most common terminals are Frihamnen and Värtahamnen on the northeast side of the city, which are about 2-3 miles from the city center. Smaller ships may dock at Stadsgården, which is closer to the historic Gamla Stan. All terminals are modern and well-equipped.

⚓ Terminal Information

The Frihamnen cruise terminal is a modern, spacious building that can accommodate several large ships. The walk from the ship to the terminal is on a flat surface, and you are just a short taxi or subway ride from the city center. The Stadsgården terminal is closer to the city, and from there you can often walk to the historic Gamla Stan.

🚻 Terminal Facilities

At the Frihamnen terminal, you'll find a welcome team of volunteers who can provide maps and information. The terminal has restrooms, a small cafe, and a few shops selling souvenirs and snacks. Tour pickups and a taxi stand are located just outside the terminal. You will also find a tourist information center with free Wi-Fi, which is a big plus.

🗣️ Language

The local language is Swedish, but English is widely spoken and understood, especially in the main tourist areas. You will have no problem navigating, communicating, or exploring the city.

A few useful phrases:

  • Hej (hey) - Hello

  • Tack (tahk) - Thank you

  • Ursäkta mig (oor-SHEHK-tah mey) - Excuse me

  • Talar du engelska? (TAH-lahr doo EHNG-ehls-kah) - Do you speak English?

  • Fika (FEE-kah) - A coffee and pastry break, a cherished Swedish tradition.

💰 Money

The currency is the Swedish Krona (SEK). However, Sweden is a largely cashless society, and many shops and businesses do not accept cash. Credit cards are widely accepted everywhere, even for a small purchase like a coffee. It is not necessary to have cash on hand. ATMs are available throughout the city, but you should check with your bank to see if they charge a fee for international withdrawals.

🚗 Transportation

Stockholm has an excellent public transportation system that is clean, efficient, and easy to use.

  • Walking: The best way to explore Stockholm is on foot. The city is a flat and compact city, and many of the main attractions are within walking distance of each other.

  • Subway (Tunnelbana): The subway system is a fast and efficient way to get around the city. The subway station, Gärdet T-bana, is about a 10-minute walk from the Frihamnen terminal, and from there you can get to the city center in about 7 minutes. You can use your contactless payment card to tap in and out for your fare.

  • Taxis: Taxis are available at the cruise terminal, and the ride to the city center will cost around 110-130 SEK. It is a good idea to use a reputable company like Taxi Stockholm.

  • Hop-on-Hop-off Bus: A hop-on-hop-off bus service is also available and is a convenient way to see the city's highlights.

♿ Accessibility

Stockholm has an accessibility rating of 7 out of 10. The cruise terminals are modern and fully accessible, with ramps and elevators. The city has made a great effort to make its public transportation system and main attractions accessible. However, the historic Gamla Stan (Old Town) has cobblestone streets and narrow passages that can be a challenge.

🚶‍♀️ The best way to get to town from cruise port

If you are docked at Frihamnen or Värtahamnen, the best way to get to the city center is to take the subway from Gärdet T-bana station or a taxi. If you are docked at Stadsgården, you can often walk to the historic Gamla Stan.

🚽 Toilet

Public toilets are generally available and clean in Stockholm, especially at major tourist attractions, train stations, and shopping centers. You may have to pay a small fee to use them.

💊 Drugstore

  • Apotek Hjärtat: There are many Apotek Hjärtat pharmacies throughout the city, and they are a great place to get everything from over-the-counter medications to cosmetics.
