Runavik

Runavík, Faroe Islands, is a charming and remote port town nestled on the shores of a stunning fjord. As a key port in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago of 18 volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, Runavík offers a serene and authentic Scandinavian experience. The town is an excellent base for exploring the dramatic landscapes and unique culture of the islands, with the capital city of Tórshavn just a short journey away. For a cruiser, Runavík offers a chance to experience a place that is truly off the beaten path.

⛵ Port Introduction

Your cruise ship will dock directly at the Port of Runavík. The port is situated in a sheltered bay with modern quays that can handle large vessels. You will be able to walk directly from the ship to the land, so no tender is required. The walk to the town center is very short and on a flat surface. The port has recently invested in new infrastructure, making it a well-equipped and welcoming destination.

⚓ Terminal Information

The Port of Runavík is an active commercial and industrial port. However, a special area has been set aside for cruise passengers. The area is a simple open-air setup with a small welcome area.

🚻 Terminal Facilities

While there is no large, permanent terminal building, the port area is well-equipped for visitors. You'll find a small tourist information point on the quayside with maps, guidance, and local tips. Public restrooms are available, and a reception area is staffed to assist with any questions. The port offers free Wi-Fi, and tour pickups are located just outside the pier area.

🗣️ Language

The local language is Faroese, a West Nordic language derived from Old Norse. However, almost everyone you will encounter in the Faroe Islands speaks Danish, and English is widely spoken and understood, especially in the main tourist areas. You will have no problem at all navigating, communicating, or exploring.

A few useful phrases:

  • Hey (hey) - Hello

  • Takk fyri (tahk fih-ree) - Thank you

  • Gott (goht) - Good

  • Aftur (ah-toor) - Again

💰 Money

The official currency of the Faroe Islands is the Faroese Króna (FOK) and the Danish Krone (DKK), which have the same value. Danish banknotes are equally acceptable throughout the country. While some tourist-focused shops may accept Euros or U.S. Dollars, it's not common practice. It's highly recommended to use a credit card, which is widely accepted everywhere, or withdraw local currency from an ATM for the best rates. ATMs are available in Runavík.

✨ Authentic Experience

  1. Dine on Local Faroese Cuisine: For a truly local experience, seek out a small cafe or restaurant and try some traditional Faroese cuisine. The islands are famous for their lamb, fish, and seafood. Look for local specialties like "ræst" (fermented) lamb, or fresh fish and chips.

  2. Hike to Lake Toftavatn: Instead of a long bus tour, take a hike to the beautiful Lake Toftavatn, which is a short walk from the port. The lake is surrounded by a unique heather area and is a popular spot for bird watching. It's a great way to experience the islands' unique landscape up close.

  3. Visit a Local Faroese Home for a "Heimablídni" Experience: For a truly immersive cultural experience, book a "heimablídni," a local tradition of dining in a Faroese home. It's a great way to connect with locals and learn about their culture and way of life.
