Málaga, Spain, is a sun-drenched port city on the Costa del Sol, a place where a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a stunning Mediterranean coastline come together. For a cruiser, Málaga is a fantastic destination, offering everything from ancient Roman ruins and Moorish fortresses to world-class museums and a lively food scene, all within easy walking distance of the cruise port. 

⛵ Port Introduction

Málaga Cruise Port has three terminals: Terminal A, Terminal B, and the Palm Grove Terminal. Your ship will dock directly at a pier, so no tender is required. Larger ships will dock in the eastern area, while smaller ships may dock at the Palm Grove Terminal, which is within a five-minute walk of the city center. 

⚓ Terminal Information

The cruise terminals at Málaga are modern and well-equipped. Terminal A is a turnaround terminal designed for the latest generation of ships, while Terminal B can operate several ships at once. The Palm Grove Terminal is a boutique terminal in the heart of the city, designed for small to mid-sized ships. The walk from the ship to the main port entrance can be up to 1.5 to 2 kilometers, but a shuttle bus service is available. 

🚻 Terminal Facilities

The terminals have a comprehensive range of amenities. You'll find restrooms, a tourist information desk, and a shuttle service. There are also a number of shops, including duty-free stores, and a cafe. You'll also find a taxi stand and tour pickups located just outside the terminals. The port offers free Wi-Fi, and a number of services like wheelchair rental and luggage delivery are also available.  

🗣️ Language

The local language is Spanish, but due to a high volume of tourism, you will find that English is widely spoken and understood, especially in the main tourist areas. You will have no problem navigating or communicating.

💰 Money

The currency is the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted everywhere, and contactless payments are very common. It's a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases from street vendors or for bus tickets. ATMs are easy to find at the port and throughout the city. Be aware that some ATMs may charge a fee for withdrawals. 

🚗 Transportation

Málaga's city center is very walkable, and its main attractions are clustered in the city center. 

  • Walking: The best way to explore Málaga is on foot. The walk from the cruise terminal to the city center is about 15-20 minutes along a beautiful waterfront promenade, Muelle Uno. 

  • Shuttle Bus: The port offers a shuttle bus service that takes you from the ship to the port entrance near the city center. 

  • Taxis: Taxis are available at the cruise terminal. The rates are metered, but it is still a good idea to get an estimate of the cost before you begin your journey. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Cabify are also available. 

  • Public Bus: The public bus system is an excellent and affordable way to get around the city. A single fare is €1.40. 

  • Hop-on-Hop-off Bus: A hop-on-hop-off bus service is also available at the port and is a convenient way to see the city's highlights. 

♿ Accessibility

Málaga has an accessibility rating of 6 out of 10. The cruise terminals are modern and accessible, and the walk from the port to the city center is flat and well-maintained. The city center is also largely pedestrian-friendly. However, some of the historic sites, like the Alcazaba fortress, have stairs and uneven terrain that can be challenging to navigate. 

🚶‍♀️ The best way to get to town from cruise port

The best way to get to the city center from the cruise port is to walk. The port is located very close to the city center, and the walk is a pleasant stroll along the waterfront promenade. 

🚽 Toilet

Public toilets are available in Málaga, but they are not very common. Your best bet is to use the restrooms in the cruise terminals, or in cafes and restaurants. Be aware that some places may charge a small fee.

  • Pharmacy Caffarena: Alameda Principal, 2, 29005 Málaga, Spain. This pharmacy is open 24 hours. 

  • Other Pharmacies: There are many other pharmacies in the city center. 

✨ Authentic Experience

  1. Walk the Muelle Uno and Dine at the Atarazanas Market: The Muelle Uno is a modern waterfront promenade with a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops. From there, you can walk to the Atarazanas Market, a bustling, covered market where you can find a variety of fresh produce, meat, and fish. It's a great place to try some local food and experience the city's culinary scene. 

  2. Explore the Alcazaba and Roman Theatre: For a deep dive into the city's history, visit the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress that dates back to the 11th century. From there, you can walk to the Roman Theatre, which was built in the 1st century BC. 

  3. Visit the Picasso Museum: Málaga is the birthplace of the famous artist Pablo Picasso. The Picasso Museum is a must-see, with a stunning collection of over 200 of his works.
