Eidfjord

Eidfjord, Norway is a breathtaking port located at the innermost part of the Hardangerfjord, often called the "Queen of the Fjords." This small village of about 900 people is a perfect example of Norway's high-drama landscape, with steep cliffs, towering waterfalls, and a tranquil fjord. While Eidfjord itself is compact and charming, it is primarily a gateway to the spectacular Vøringsfossen waterfall, the vast Hardangervidda mountain plateau, and the nearby Norwegian Nature Center. As a cruise port, its unique position allows you to step off the ship and directly into the heart of this stunning natural world.

⛵ Port Introduction

Your ship will dock directly at the Eidfjord Cruise Port, which is located in the center of the village. This is a significant advantage, as you can walk right off the gangway and onto the streets of Eidfjord. The walk from the ship to the town center and the tourist information office is very short, only about 50 meters. The port is able to handle large ships and offers a very smooth and convenient disembarkation process.

⚓ Terminal Information

The Eidfjord Cruise Port is a simple and efficient setup. There is no large, enclosed terminal building. Instead, you disembark directly onto a small pier. The port has a small information point right on the quayside to welcome passengers.

🚻 Terminal Facilities

While there is no large terminal building, the area right by the pier is well-equipped for visitors. You'll find a tourist information office that provides maps and information on local tours and activities. Public restrooms are also available. The port offers free Wi-Fi for passengers and crew. Tour pickups, including the popular "Troll Train" and shuttle buses to the Vøringsfossen waterfall, are all located just outside the pier area. You'll find a number of small shops and a cafe right on the waterfront.

🗣️ Language

The local language is Norwegian, but virtually everyone you encounter in Eidfjord, especially in the tourist industry, speaks excellent English. You will have no trouble navigating or communicating.

A few useful phrases:

  • Hallo (HAH-low) - Hello

  • Takk (tahk) - Thank you

  • Vennligst (VEHN-leest) - Please

  • Unnskyld (OON-shool) - Excuse me

  • Snakker du engelsk? (SNAH-kehr doo EHNG-ehls) - Do you speak English?

💰 Money

The official currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). While some souvenir shops might accept Euros or U.S. Dollars, it's best to pay in NOK to get the best exchange rate. Credit cards are widely accepted everywhere, even for small purchases, making them the most convenient form of payment. ATMs are available in the village center, just a short walk from the cruise pier. Tipping is not mandatory or expected in Norway, as service charges are included in the bill, but you can round up the bill or leave a small tip for exceptional service.

🚗 Transportation

Eidfjord is a very walkable town, but if you want to venture to the main attractions outside the village, you'll need transportation.

  • Walking: The town itself, the Viking burial sites, and the old church are all within easy walking distance of the port.

  • Shuttle Bus/Troll Train: The most popular option for getting to Vøringsfossen is a shuttle bus or the Troll Train, a road train that offers a guided tour of the local area. Tickets can be purchased at the tourist information office.

  • Taxis: A handful of taxis are available and can be booked through the tourist information point. They are an expensive option, but a good choice for a group.

  • Bike Rentals: You can rent bikes or e-bikes from the tourist office for a self-guided tour of the area.

♿ Accessibility

Eidfjord has an accessibility rating of 3 out of 10. While the village itself is generally flat and easy to navigate, the most famous attractions, like the Vøringsfossen waterfall, are located on steep, winding mountain roads with viewing platforms that can be challenging to navigate. The Troll Train and some of the shuttle buses are designed to be accessible.

🚶‍♀️ The best way to get to town from cruise port

The best way to get to town is to walk. The cruise pier is located right in the village center, and you are immediately surrounded by shops, cafes, and local sights.

🚽 Toilet

Public toilets are available in the village and are generally clean and free to use. You can also find restrooms at the tourist information office and in most cafes and restaurants.

💊 Drugstore

  • Boots Pharmacy: The closest Boots pharmacy is located a bit further away. Your best bet is to ask at the tourist information office for the nearest place to get over-the-counter medication.

  • Apotek 1: While there isn't a major chain pharmacy in Eidfjord, the tourist information office can direct you to local shops that sell basic necessities.

✨ Authentic Experience

  1. Hike to the Viking Burial Mounds: Instead of a long bus tour, take a walk to the Hæreid Viking burial site. It's an easy 1.5-hour hike from the town center, and it offers stunning views of the fjord and the village. It's the largest collection of ancient burial sites in western Norway and provides a peaceful and authentic look into the region's history.

  2. Dine on Local Norwegian Cuisine: For a truly local experience, seek out a small cafe or restaurant and try some traditional Norwegian food. Look for dishes made with local fjord trout or salmon. Another classic is "rømmegrøt," a rich sour cream porridge often served with sugar, cinnamon, and cured meat, which is a perfect comfort food.

  3. Visit the Norwegian Nature Center: For an educational and immersive experience, take the bus to the Norwegian Nature Center. This modern center has interactive exhibits on Norwegian nature and the environment, and a must-see panoramic film that takes you on a stunning journey through the Hardangervidda plateau, waterfalls, and glaciers.
