Bimini

Bimini, Bahamas, is a hidden gem in the Caribbean, a small island paradise located just 50 nautical miles off the coast of Florida. This laid-back destination is a world away from the bustling crowds of other Bahamian ports. The island is known for its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, and a relaxed, authentic vibe. As a cruise port, Bimini is a fantastic place for cruisers who want to spend a day enjoying the sun, sand, and sea.

⛵ Port Introduction

Your cruise ship will dock directly at the Resorts World Bimini cruise port, which is located on North Bimini, the largest of the three islands. This is a big advantage, as you can simply walk off the ship and onto a long pier that leads to the island's main plaza. The pier is quite long, but it offers a beautiful view of the island as you approach. Once you are off the pier, you are right at the beginning of the developed area.

⚓ Terminal Information

The Bimini Cruise Port is a modern and well-maintained facility that opened in 2021. The pier is a permanent structure that can handle one ship at a time. The walk from the ship to the main plaza is on a paved walkway and takes about 5-10 minutes.

🚻 Terminal Facilities

While there is no traditional enclosed terminal building, the port area is well-equipped with amenities. You'll find restrooms, a small welcome area, and a few vendors. The main attraction is the proximity to the beach and the Resorts World Bimini complex, which has a variety of restaurants, bars, and a casino. There is a free tram that runs continuously from the pier, making it easy to get around. Wi-Fi is available in some areas of the resort but not at the pier itself.

🗣️ Language

The official language is English, and you will have no problem at all navigating or communicating. The local dialect is Bahamian English, but it is easy to understand.

💰 Money

The currency is the Bahamian Dollar (BSD), which is pegged to the U.S. Dollar (USD) at a 1-to-1 ratio. U.S. Dollars are widely accepted everywhere, and there is no need to exchange money. Many local vendors and golf cart rental companies operate on a cash-only basis, so it's a good idea to have some cash on hand. For purchases at Resorts World, you can charge to your room or use a credit card.

🚗 Transportation

Bimini is a small island, and transportation is unique.

·       Walking: The best way to get around the area right around the port is to walk. The beaches and some of the local shops are a short walk away.

·       Free Tram: Resorts World operates a free tram that runs on a loop between the cruise port, Fisherman's Village, and the Bimini Beach Club. This is a convenient and free way to get around the main tourist areas.

·       Golf Carts: This is the most popular way to explore the island on your own. You can rent a golf cart for the day for around $60-$90 (USD). It gives you the freedom to explore the entire island. You just need a valid driver's license to rent one.

·       Taxis: Taxis are available in the form of vans and SUVs. The rates are fixed and posted at the cruise terminal. Taxis are a good option for groups or if you want to be dropped off at a specific location.

♿ Accessibility

Bimini has an accessibility rating of 2 out of 10. While the cruise pier is a flat and easy walk, the island is primarily made of sand, which is extremely difficult to navigate with a wheelchair. The main walking paths are paved, but to get to the beach, you have to be able to walk on sand.

🚶‍♀️ The best way to get to town from cruise port

The best way to get to town from the cruise port is to rent a golf cart or take a taxi. While the free tram is convenient, a golf cart gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

🚽 Toilet

Public toilets are available at the cruise terminal area, at the main beach areas, and in restaurants and cafes. They are generally clean and well-maintained.

💊 Drugstore

There are no major drugstore chains on Bimini. The island has a small clinic and local shops that may sell basic over-the-counter medications. It's a good idea to bring any medication you may need with you.

✨ Authentic Experience

1.       Dine on Fresh Conch Fritters and Seafood: Bimini is famous for its fresh seafood, especially conch. Seek out a local food truck or a small, family-run restaurant and try some conch fritters or a fresh conch salad. It's a delicious and authentic taste of the Bahamas.

2.       Explore the Island by Golf Cart: Instead of a long tour, rent a golf cart and take a self-guided tour of the island. You can drive to Radio Beach, the famous Dolphin House, and other local spots. This gives you the freedom to stop wherever you like and interact with locals, which is a great way to experience the island's laid-back atmosphere.

3.       Snorkel or Dive to the SS Sapona Shipwreck: For an adventure that is uniquely Bimini, take a snorkeling or diving tour to the SS Sapona, a concrete ship that ran aground in a hurricane in 1926. The shipwreck is in shallow, clear water, and it's a great spot to see a variety of marine life.
