St John, Antigua & Barbuda - Cruise Port
When researching for our St. John’s, Antigua cruise port video, one thing became clear: we needed a tour. And one name kept popping up on forums and Tripadvisor—Lawrence of Antigua. Could he be the best tour guide on the island? We had to find out! Join us as we dive into port details and share our experience on this unforgettable tour.
Welcome to Antigua!
Antigua, part of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, sits at the meeting point of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Known for its 365 beaches (one for every day of the year!), Antigua offers stunning coastlines, rich English naval history, thrilling zip lines, and luxurious yachts in the south.
Arriving at St. John’s Cruise Port
Your cruise ship will dock in St. John’s, Antigua’s main town, at Heritage Quay. This small but efficient port can accommodate up to four ships at once. Here’s what you need to know upon arrival:
Shopping Promenade: Right at the dock, expect to find Diamonds International, souvenir shops, a small casino, restaurants, and clean restrooms.
Taxi Stand: Located about 100 yards down past the casino. Some drivers offer set tours, while others provide transport to specific destinations. Taxi fares are government-regulated but not posted, see our link above for 2025 official taxi rate.
ATMs: There’s an ATM advertised at the casino, but for a safer option, head outside to ACB Caribbean Bank on Thames Street.
Currency: The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (ECD), but US dollars and credit cards are widely accepted.
Pharmacy: St. John’s Pharmacy, just outside to the right, is handy for basic needs and has a pharmacist’s desk.
Why We Chose a Tour
While St. John’s has a small historical museum, the town itself doesn’t offer much beyond an hour of exploring. Sidewalks can be uneven, making it a rough walk. So, instead of wandering aimlessly, we opted for a tour—specifically, Lawrence of Antigua, a highly recommended guide with glowing reviews.
Booking with Lawrence
Lawrence offers customizable tours based on your schedule and interests. We booked a three-hour island tour for $50 per person (plus $15 for national park fees covering Shirley Heights and Nelson’s Dockyard). This was 2024/2025 price. Booking was easy—just an email via his website. He responded promptly, and we arranged to meet just outside the dock at the shopping promenade.
The Tour Experience
The moment we met Lawrence, we knew we were in good hands. His spacious, air-conditioned van comfortably seated six people. Equipped with laminated maps, a microphone, and an infectious personality, he was the perfect guide. Highlights included:
1. Shirley Heights Lookout
This historic military post offers the best panoramic views of Antigua. It’s also a famous sunset party spot. The entrance fee includes access to Nelson’s Dockyard just down the hill.
2. Nelson’s Dockyard – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
This beautifully restored 18th-century English naval dockyard was once a crucial base protecting Antigua’s lucrative sugar trade. Today, it’s home to designer yachts, charming colonial buildings, and a lively atmosphere. Park tour guides provide entertaining commentary (with a free rum punch!). Don’t miss:
The Naval Officer’s House, featuring a museum and a stunning outdoor deck.
Exploring the grounds at your own pace.
3. Darkwood Beach – A Slice of Paradise
On our way back to St. John’s, we stopped at Darkwood Beach, a serene spot with crystal-clear waters. A small restaurant and beach club offer food, drinks, and umbrella rentals. Antigua has countless beaches like this, each offering a relaxing, crowd-free experience.
Final Thoughts: Is Lawrence the Best Tour Guide?
Absolutely! Lawrence provided a safe, informative, and engaging tour, ensuring we had a fantastic time. Whether you have limited mobility or just want a stress-free adventure, he’s a top choice. We highly recommend him!
